WWW Wednesday – 8/7/2020

Another week has flown by! This has been a much more relaxed week for me. Starting a new job is always a frantic and even more so now that I am work from home, but I have been able to stick to a proper working schedule which means I actually had time to read! I am also hoping that with Bookopolathon happening this weekend I will be able to get some more books ticked off but I will have to wait and see what the prompts are for those

Happy Wednesday!

Its that time of the Week again! WWW Wednesday is a weekly meme that was revived by Taking on a World of Words. I like it cause it is fairly simple but allows me to check in with my reading but also with you!

WHAT BOOK HAVE YOU RECENTLY FINISHED?

WHAT DO YOU THINK YOU WILL READ NEXT?

Thomas Wildus and the Book of Sorrows
J.M Bergen

Yes another Group book. This is the second book I am reading as part of the Middle Grade Monthly group this month. We just finished the first section discussion on Monday and it looks like we are all kind of intrigued as to where this one will take us. Lots of fun theories bouncing around. I am very interested to know what the Book of Sorrows has in store for Thomas and hopefully we will spend some more time at the mysterious bookshop too.

Girl, Serpent, Thorn
Melissa Basherdoust

I had an eARc copy of this beauty and I just posted my spoiler free review yesterday. This was such an interesting read. It did have a disappointing lack of world building for my personal tastes but I really enjoyed the love triangle which is not something I usually gravitate too. You can read my full thoughts HERE

The Ship of Shadows
Maria Kuznar

Another middle grade on my list this time as part of a Blog tour that is sneaking up on me fast. As this is not a group read I don’t have to stick to a schedule so I can just sit down and enjoy this one at my leisure. I fully anticipate this will be a fun read.

WWW Wednesday- 1/7/20

Happy Wednesday! And Happy July! It’s not just a start of a new month for me but I have officially changed jobs. While not physically moving to my new office as we are still socially distancing in Scotland, I am officially working for a different university now. Therefore, the last week has been a bit hectic with trying to finish projects off in anticipation of my last day. However, I did manage to finish off a couple of quick reads and a re-read!

City of Ashes

The Mortal Instruments

I am doing a buddy read for the whole shadow hunters universe with Ellie from Read to Ramble. We both really enjoyed City of Bones (you can read all our thoughts HERE) and I hope we will enjoy this one too.

Nevermoor: The Trials of Morrigan Crow
Jessica Townsend

This was a re-read for me that I read for Middle Grade Marvels Book of the Month for June. I am also re-reading this series in anticipation for the release of Hollow pox in August. I love this book. It just just so magical and filled with detail. I am sure to jump into Wundersmith in July.

The Jumbies
Tracey Baptiste

Another Buddy read. This is one of two July books for Middle Grade Marvels. My physical copy just arrived today and I am keen to get started. I have lots of fun new middle grade to read this month and this book seems a great place to start.

The Angel of the Crows
Katherine Addison

This is an eARC and I was really excited by the blurb which promised a really interesting world building. What the blurb doesnt mention is is is a paranormal retelling of a couple of the Sherlock Holmes stories. In fact calling it a retelling is generous as its more like a regurgitation with some names changed (but not all) and some paranormal elements jammed in. Which so far has made it pretty disappointing. I am hoping if I continue it will diverge from A Study in Scarlet into its own story as I could have just as easily read A Study in Scarlet!

A Declaration of the Rights of Magicians
H.G Parry

Anyone that has read anything on my blog or Twitter this year knows how much I loved H.G. Parry’s debut, The Unlikely Escape of Uriah Heep, I haven’t stopped talking about it. Even though it was one of the first books I read this year It held the spot of my favourite read firmly. Until now! As this was an eARC I will be publishing my full review very soon but spoilers I will be gushing

Lies, Damned Lies and History
Jodi Taylor

Chronicles of St Mary’s #7

I am missing Max, Peterson and Markham. I was gifted the remaining books in this series (with a promise of book 11 when it is released) for my birthday and they have been sitting in my TBR cart looking all pretty waiting for me to pick them up. I am having to hold my self back and ration them out as they are just so fun and fast paced.

WWW Wednesday – 10/06/2020

This past week has been real slumpy! I have hardly managed to read at all and when I did it was a couple of pages at a time. I just haven’t been able to settle on a book. I have been bouncing about from different books but just not finding one that really holds my busy mind at the moment.

City of Bones

Mortal Instruments #1

As part of my Shadowhunter Saturdays feature this has been one of the only books I have kept my concentration for more than a few pages. I am sticking to my 30 pages a day and unfortunately that is all I seem to be managing to read most days.

Tilly and the Lost Fairytales
Anna James

Pages and Co #2

While I didn’t love this as much as the first book, it was still and awesome read that really caught me in the feels. The cliffhanger was nasty though and I am eagerly waiting the third ones release in September. I should have a review for both books in the series up soon.

?

I honestly don’t know. I am really unsure what I am in the mood for. I am really struggling to stick with anything I pick up at the moment. I am hoping I can break the slump.

Guards! Guards!
Terry Pratchett

City watch #1

I really needed some comic relief and I know I can trust Pratchett for that. I only have a few pages left of this one. it is not disappointing filled with the expected wordplay and dark humour.

Aurora Rising
Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff

The Aurora Cycle #1

This was actually a little disappointing. There was so much going on but it didn’t follow through with them. Don’t promise me a heist and then wrap it up in couple of pages with no detail. it just seemed like this could have been two seperate books easily expanding detail in areas it lacked.

The City We Became
N. K. Jemisin

I have been wanting to make time for this since it was released and it was on my May TBR which totally got away from me. So I am determined this is the week I sit down and read this book!

WWW Wednesday – 27/5/2020

Another Wednesday, and a return to reading form for me. The bank holiday weekend really allowed me to dive in to some books and I managed to actually get some finished. It’s definitely not going to be a 14 book month for me but I have made a nice dent in my big book TBR!

eARC

I am finishing up this eARC, which was supposed to be released this week (I believe the ebook still is) but has recently been pushed back to early next year. I really liked the set up and I am enjoying the world building. We follow some awesome perspectives, however there are quiet a number of them and their is some specific naming of characters that appear to be a nod to another author that is somewhat distracting.

The Hand on the Wall
Maureen Johnson

Truly Devious #3

I devoured this over the holiday Monday finishing almost all of it in one day. It was a great ending to the series, really fun and just filled with that cozy mystery feeling. I will be reviewing it soon.

Aurora Rising
Amee Kaufman and Jay Kristoff

I am late to the Party on this one especially as I received the second book in the series this week. I am going to finally start this book this this evening and I am looking forward to a danger filled space adventure, with squad 312.

WWW Wednesday – 20/50/20

May is marching on, and I am not getting through my TBR as quickly as I had hoped. It is the last few days of Tomoe topple and I am making good progress on my TBR, but I am looking forward to diving back into some shorter high paced reads.

Royal Assassin

The Farseer Trilogy #2

I had partially read some of this book before but again like the first book in the series I am much more invested this time round. The life of Fitz is really interesting both the court politics and those elements of war, Fitz’s love life and his magic all have there own interesting threads in this story. I am over half way through and while it is a slow read due to all the detail I am still hoping to finish it before the end of tome topple

The Final Empire
Brandon Sanderson

Mistborn #1

Damn Sanderson can write a book! I really really enjoyed this one. Such a fun mix of political machinations, a good old fashioned heist and high fantasy. The magic system is so interesting and the world building is extensive. I will be picking up the next one quickly as I need to know where we go next.

Guards! Guards!
Terry Pratchett

Discworld #8, City watch #1

I think after two long and heavy high fantasy books I need something a little lighter and Pratchett is perfect for that. I really enjoy Pratchett’s sense of humour and word play so I think I will probably zoom through this one. It is also my husband’s favourite sub-series of the discworld books so I am keen to get to it as I haven’t read the City watch series before.

WWW Wednesday -6/5/2020

First Wednesday of a new month is always fun lots of exciting new books on the TBR. It has been a bit of a slow start for me this month I have jumped around many different books but have yet to finish any. I am taking it slow I am sure it will pick up on the upcoming holiday weekend.

eARC – release date originally 26/5/2020 may be pushed back to spring 2021

There is a bit of confusion as to when this is actually coming out. I started reading it as it is one of my only May ARCs that had not been pushed back but it seems it might now be. However, I am loving this. It is one of those books that just hooks you from the start with a great sassy MC, awesome world building. we are now getting into different perspectives and I am really intrigued to see how it all merges together.

What could Possibly go Wrong?
Jodi Taylor

Chronicles of St Mary’s book 6

AHHHH I LOVE THIS series. I just devour them. This is the last of the books that I own physically and you can be damn sure the next five will be winging there way to me asap. This one is just as exciting as the previous but as Max our MC has moved into a more supervisory role within st Mary’s and we have new trainee characters there is a nice shift in the story dynamic. I am really loving some of the new characters and what they add to the madness. I am nearly finished this one as they are just so easy to read.

Royal Assassin
Robin Hobb

Farseer #2

With Tome Topple starting on Friday I think its time to dive into my big books for the month and try and get as many of them read as I can. Combine that with the Bank Holiday weekend and I am hoping this one will be done by sunday. I am currently doing the Elderlingalong which is a readalong that is working there way through Robin Hobbs Realm of the Elderling series. This is book 2 in the first trilogy. I really enjoyed book one and I can’t wait to find out what awaits Fitz in this one.

Its the last few days of the OWLs! and I still have two books to finish! One of which needs to be reviewed soon! I have done a fair bit of switching up of my TBR. I really think I can only set a small TBR and then mood read the rest of the month as half the books I chose have been swapped and switched for something I was in the mood for. Currently I have finished 10 Owls, 2 books not for my owls and 3616 pages!

The Dragon Republic

The Poppy War #2

O.W.L: I swapped this from Charms to transfiguration!

This book has really thrown me back into the deep end of the series and I am really glad that it does. It is high action from the start and that just makes it so easy to get absorbed. This has also taken a direction I really wasn’t expecting. I have just under 200 pages left so I am hoping I can finish it soon.

Giant Days #5
John Allison

Giant Days

O.W.L: This is now my read for Charms

I love this series. They are great for readathons, but also reminds me so much of the various people I met during my undergrad. Its fun funny and nostalgic. I really needed to read something fun. I had just finished two low star reads and was feeling a bit slumpy but this really lifted my mood.

Goldilocks
Laura Lam

O.W.L: Astronomy

Ok this is more of a currently reading but I haven’t fully picked my 6 books for my May TBR so can’t post a sneak peak of that yet. I also really need to finish this. I have an eARC and it is released tomorrow so I want to read the last few chapters tonight and get my review up tomorrow. So this will be the next book I will focus on finishing.

Another Wednesday, another weekly check in! Week 4 of the O.W.Ls is under way and I am am beginning to worry I might not finish all my chosen reads! I also have a blog tour coming up and still have to finish the book! Yikes its going to be a busy week.

As an Owls update i have finished 7 OWLs with a further 3 in progress.

Girls of Paper and Fire #2

O.W.Ls: Transfiguration

I have just picked this up as I have strayed away from fantasy in my last couple of reads and I am wanting to dive back into a fantasy world. I started this this morning with my morning coffee and I am hoping to make quick progress. its also a belated eARC that I really should finish and review ASAP.

The Woman in cabin 10
Ruth Ware

O.W.L: Muggle studies

LOVED THIS! I put out a twitter poll to help me decide what to read for Muggle studies since the eARC I had planned on reading had been pushed back substantially. Woman in cabin 10 won and wow am I glad it did. An impulse buy as it was 99p on kindle I am now eager to read more from Ruth Ware.

The Dragon Republic
R.F. Kuang

O.W.L: Charms

This is the last O.W.L I would need to complete to for Curse breaker. it is also another belated eARC (the end of last year beginning of this year has really been crazy and I really need to catch up on my commitments). I really enjoyed the first in the series and I am hoping I will enjoy this as much and can dive into the third in the series when it is released.
